Utopia: Visions and Traditions – 2019

December 12th, 2019 – January 19th 2020
The Gallery at Stanton Street Shul
180 Stanton Street, New York, New York
A collaboration between Yiddish New York and the Stanton Street Shul
Curated by Tine Kindermann and Deborah Ugoretz
In collaboration with Jeff Cohen and Jill Slater

The longing for an ideal society, where all people are treated with respect, all of their needs are met and we see an end to war and fear – a Utopia – has existed as long as humans have recognized suffering and searched for solutions to end it. Religious, philosophical and political thinkers, dreamers, artists and movements have addressed the question of what would constitute and/or create a “Heaven on Earth” and beyond. How do visual artists grapple with these questions, both drawing from traditions of envisioning a better future and creating their own?

Artists: Dory Bergman, Pamela Casper, Catt Caulley, Marilyn Cvitanic, Susan C. Dessel, Yael Dresdner, Sherry Erskine, Ula Einstein, Yevgeniy Fiks, Harriet Finck, David K. Friedman, Zvi Goldman, Karen Hatch, Hedda Kafka, Tine Kindermann, Fruma Markowitz, Ellen Deitell Newman, Diane Reich, Yevgeniya Rozentsvit, Phyllis Ruffer, Jacqueline Sferra, Joel Silverstein, Arlene Sokolow, Daniel Toretsky, Deborah Ugoretz, David Wander, Larisa Voloshin
