YNY Kids 2023!
AM1 (Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed) Yiddishe Kinder (Gottesman, Bloom)
This course will provide an introduction to the Yiddish language for kids, with an emphasis on communication, play, and song! Over the course of the week, students will develop and construct a Yiddish-speaking puppet khaver (friend) to accompany us as we learn how to introduce ourselves; share our favorite numbers, colors, and animals; and map out our families and our routines. We will also work in material connected to the rest of YNY kids’ programming as possible.
AM2 (Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed) – Family Band (Strauss)
Yiddish New York’s beloved family band returns in person! Facilitated by musician and educator Deborah Strauss, YNY Kids and their families will learn a klezmer tune, and add their own flair using voice, body percussion, instruments, found sounds, and more. All ages, abilities, and instruments are welcome!
PM1 & PM2 (Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed) – Der Natur-Parad: The Nature Parade (Viola, Gottesman)
Join us for this optimistic adventure into nature and yiddishkeit. Over the course of the week we will learn about how to take care of our planet, intertwined with related yiddish music and games, and lots of PLAY. The week will end with a kids’ parade through the building where we will share our learning and songs with our YNY community.
YNY Teens 2023!
AM1, AM2, PM1, PM2 (Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed) – Teens Program! (Romaine, Gold-Shapiro, Ferholt-Wirz)
This year’s Yiddish New York youth theater project will investigate the international Jewish fascination with eggplant, and its relationship to Greenwich Village. How many ways do Jewish people need to be able to prepare eggplant to have a good life? Is the eggplant emoji secretly in the Torah? How do Yiddish anti-militarists prepare eggplant? If potatoes and eggplant are both considered deadly nightshade vegetables, why did Tuli Kupferburg, Yiddish anarchist leader of the East Village folk rock band the Fugs, sing “Bulbes (potatoes) “Nothing?” What are 3 Yiddish uses of “nothing?” What is the relationship of anti militarists efforts to “nothing?” During our sessions we will walk and learn the streets of Greenwich village, devour recipe books, read stories and poetry in Yiddish and other Jewish languages. We’ll sing and cook and write, rehearse and perform at Thursday’s student concert. Penny Bordeaux, stage illusionist and Eve Jochnowitz, Yiddish Kitchen wizard, will join Jenny Romaine, Ozzy Gold-Shapiro, Raya Ferholt-Wirz and YOU in this caper. Please bring striped clothes, as well as warm socks, hats, gloves and gatkes ( long underwear) for our field trips and walks!
AM-2 students are encouraged to join the Family Band if that feels fun.
These workshops will not be live-streamed.
